Whipple Hemi GEN 5 3.8L / 3.0L Supercharger vs GEN 3 4.5L

Whipple Hemi GEN 5 3.8L / 3.0L Supercharger vs GEN 3 4.5L

Posted by Beefcake Racing on Jan 20th 2021

The GEN 5 3.8L is coming for the Dodge Hellcat, Demon and Red Eye! The big question is how does it compare to the current 4.5L GEN 3 and new 3.0 GEN 5 Whipple Superchargers? Bigger power is available for Challenger, Charger and SRT8 and Whipple will have enough options for any build. The new 3.8 will replace the 4.5L on the Hellcat and will have higher power capabilities. The 3.0L units will be available soon in GEN 5 format for standard Hemi applications with 5.7L /  6.1L and 6.4L platforms. Whipple 3D Printed prototype of the HEMI 3.8L looks ready to rumble. We can easily see the dual core intercooler which will help keep it all running more efficiently under high boost levels.

The next part of the design process brings it one step closer to production. Using modern CNC 5-Axis technology, the engineers go from 3d printed plastic to all billet aluminum manifold. Excited yet??

Out in the wild, the new housing looks powerful in raw billet form. The GEN5 has already been proven on the Mustang platform and we know it will be a winner with Hemi powered vehicles too.

In Depth 3.8L Supercharger Features

The all New GEN 5 is setting a new standard in supercharging. Not to be confused with the Gen 3 or 4, this all new unit features industry leading efficiency from idle to redline. All new bearings, gears, rotors and housing allow the new supercharger to spin faster, longer and safer while producing more power than any other positive displacement supercharger ever built.

  • New patent pending dual intercooler for improved efficiency
  • New high flow fittings, dual in, dual out, 12an and 16an
  • New CFD based inlet design for greatly improved efficiency
  • New rotor inlet shape for increased airflow
  • New tilted throttle angle for increased airflow
  • New, higher flow lid for improved cylinder distribution
  • Increased runner length for increased torque/throttle response
  • New Whipple rotor profile
  • Increased diameter vs length for optimum efficiency
  • Updated front pulley and bearing design
  • With or without race port

The asymmetrical rotors offer a 6% increase in flow efficiency for better boost characteristics. The larger rotors (right) compared to the 3.0L (left) are designed for serious power capabilities. Both the 3.0L and the 3.8L will offer increased efficiency over the current 4.5L superchargers.

Whipple 3.8L to 4.5L Comparison

So how does the smaller GEN 5 3.8L compare to the standard GEN 3 4.5L? In theory it doesn't make sense since we all know bigger is better, like the old saying "there is no replacement for displacement." Both the 3.0L and 3.8L offer better efficiency by design, and components like new housing, rotors and bearings all aid in the ability to spin faster and with less restriction. The patented dual core intercooler makes it easier for repeat horsepower. Yes the unit is smaller and more powerful, nothing wrong with saving some weight in the process.

The current production Whipple GEN 3 4.5L is a worthy upgrade on the Dodge Hellcat models, but there is a new boss in town and the GEN 5 3.8L will be a beast for any big power builds.

Side by side, the new 3.8L will be king of the hill and soon replace the existing 4.5L in the Hellcat and Demon applications.
