 Legendary Sound and Performance

Over the Years exhaust manufacturers have come and gone, but one stands out when it comes to muscle car sound and performance.  Flowmaster has been linked to the Mustang from as far back as the 80s with the Foxbody Mustang.  Since then they have been a leader in aftermarket exhausts for the Ford Mustang, as well as many other Makes and Models where there was a need to unleash the unmistakable sound of the American V8.  Not missing a beat, Flowmaster has developed their new Outlaw and American Thunder exhaust systems for the newly released 2024 S650 Mustang.

With exhaust systems being a popular first mod that many enthusiasts perform, Flowmaster wanted to ensure that they had a complete offering for the 2024 Mustang that lives up to their legendary name and reputation.  The new American Thunder and Outlaw systems are compatible with not only the 5.0 liter V8 models, like the GT and Darkhorse but the 2.3 Liter Ecoboost models as well.  Focused on street/strip use, the new Flowmaster kits for the 2024 Mustang are perfect for the performance-oriented customer.

Fit & Finish

When it came to determining the different styles of mufflers to use on the new S650, Flowmaster turned to what they knew worked on the popular kits for the S550.  Leaning towards some of the more aggressive-sounding kits that they offer, Flowmaster went to work tweaking the design to optimize it for the S650.  Luckily Ford didn't make a lot of significant changes under the S650 when compared to the S550 platform.  The main difference was that they had to make the new systems a little longer so that fitment was just right on the new Mustang's rear valance.  Ironically enough the Scavenger Resonator Delete Kit for for the S550 Mustang is a direct fit for the S650 as well.  The similarities between the platforms aided in Flowmaster's efforts to get new kits optimized and released quickly.

Choose your System

The new S650 Mustang Flowmaster Exhausts come in both Cat Back and Axle Back configurations with two different mufflers, the American Thunder and Outlaw.  The Outlaw Exhaust Kits use a race-inspired muffler that delivers the most aggressive sound that Flowmaster offers.  The American Thunder Exhaust uses a modified version of the Super 44 Mufflers.  Design-wise it is very similar to what was used on the old Fox Body systems back in the day, so you can bet you will get that traditional chambered Flowmaster tone.

The New Flowmaster Exhaust systems are available with Ceramic Black Tips or Polished Stainless Tips depending on your preference.  The Non Valved kits have a dual exit 4" Single Tip on each site while the valved kits have the Quad 4" tips.

Higher Flow = More Performance

Even though OEM Exhaust systems have come a long way there is still tons of room for improvement when it comes to upgrading your exhaust system.  Although the Axle Back Systems yield a decent power increase, the most performance is gained with the Cat Back Systems.  The full Cat Back Systems can show up to 18 HP and 18 ft-lb of Torque increases in the 5.0L models.

One thing to note is that while testing Flowmaster noticed that the 2024 Mustangs that are equipped with the Factory Active Exhaust Systems are calibrated slightly differently and show bigger power improvements vs non-active equipped cars.

Active Exhaust Modes

The 2024 Mustang Flowmaster Kits for the Active Valve models are designed specifically to plug into the factory harness so you will retain the OEM modes.  This will allow you to alter the sound volume by changing mode.  Be sure to consider that since the Outlaw Mufflers are race-inspired, they will be louder through all of the modes than your factory exhaust.  With that said the distinct tone that the Flowmaster mufflers have mixed with the ability to select volume levels makes these kits stand out from OEM Active systems.

Flowmaster Upgrades and Add-ons

Flowmaster set up their Axle Back kits so that you can add their Scavenger X-Pipe Kit which deletes the factory resonator.  The Scavenger X-Pipe kit can be used with the factory axle back or the Flowmaster Axle Back Kits.  So why not add an axle back now and then if you want to go more aggressive you can add the Scavenger X-pipe later.  The combination of the Scavenger X-Pipe and the Axle Back kit turns it into a full custom cat back exhaust.

The Scavenger X-pipe and Axle Back combo still varies from the Flowmaster Full Cat Back kits as the full Cat Back systems use 3" Piping while the Scavenger X-pipe by itself uses 2.5" pipe to maintain compatibility with stock exhaust systems.  The full 3" cat back allows you a little more low-end airflow and gives a slightly deeper tone than the Scavenger X-Pipe and Axle Back combo.  Just some food for thought.

Some other things Flowmaster is working on are a resonator delete Y-pipe kit specifically for the 2024 Mustang 2.3L Ecoboost.  There is also word of a Force II-type system in the works for the future depending on customer demand so keep an eye out for that.
