Rack & Pinion Conversion for TRZ Drop Spindles (77 - 96 Impala & Caprice)
The TRZ Motorsports GM Manual Rack and Pinion Conversion Kit for TRZ 1.5" or 2" drop spindles delivers a precision steering upgrade for 1977 - 1996 Chevy Impala and Caprice B-Body platforms. This kit replaces the heavy OE steering linkage with a properly narrowed Pinto-style manual rack engineered for improved steering feel, reduced weight, and more consistent geometry - ideal for drag racing, Pro Street, and performance street builds.
This conversion is not bolt-in. It requires cutting, welding, and fabrication to correctly position the rack and maintain proper Ackermann, toe control, and bump-steer characteristics. TRZ strongly recommends chassis-shop installation for best results.
The kit includes an adjustable bump-steer / tie-rod adjuster assembly, rack clamp and mounting plate, a 3/4" chrome-moly steering shaft with shaft brace, and three chrome-moly U-joints (one 9/16" - 26 spline to 3/4" joint plus two 3/4" × 3/4" smooth joints). Billet aluminum steering arms are included where applicable.
Spindle Notes
Select the correct spindle configuration when ordering:
- Factory / Non-TRZ Drop Spindles: Includes Belltech, Summit, and similar aftermarket spindles that follow OE geometry. These require the factory-spindle version of the kit.
- TRZ Drop Spindles (1.5" or 2"): Use a specific tie-rod adjuster length designed to optimize toe settings and maximize bump-steer elimination. This kit (322-3T) includes the correct TRZ-specific adjusters.
