TRZ Motorsports GM Manual Rack and Pinion Conversion Kit - Factory Spindles (1977 - 1996 Chevy Impala / Caprice - B-Body) - 322-3
Manual Rack & Pinion Conversion for Factory Spindles (77 - 96 Impala & Caprice)
The TRZ Motorsports GM Manual Rack and Pinion Conversion Kit transforms steering performance on 1977 - 1996 Chevy Impala and Caprice B-Body platforms using factory or factory-style aftermarket spindles. By replacing the bulky stock steering assembly with a vehicle-specific narrowed Pinto-style manual rack, this kit dramatically improves steering response, front-end feel, and overall drivability - especially for drag racing and performance builds.
This system is not bolt-in. It requires cutting, welding, and custom fabrication for proper installation. TRZ strongly recommends having the conversion completed by a professional chassis shop to ensure correct rack angle, centerline height, and bump-steer control.
Each kit includes an adjustable bump-steer / tie-rod adjuster kit, rack clamp and mount plate, a 3/4" chrome-moly steering shaft with shaft brace, and three chrome-moly U-joints (one 9/16" - 26 spline to 3/4" joint plus two 3/4" × 3/4" smooth joints). Billet aluminum steering arms are included where applicable for supported GM spindle platforms.
Spindle Notes
Select the correct spindle version when ordering:
- Factory / Non-TRZ Drop Spindles: Includes aftermarket brands like Belltech, Summit, etc., that follow factory steering geometry.
- TRZ Drop Spindles: Use a different tie-rod adjuster length needed for correct toe and bump-steer tuning. This kit (322-3) is for factory-style spindles only.
