Rack & Pinion Conversion for TRZ Drop Spindles (71 - 76 Impala & Caprice)

The TRZ Motorsports GM Manual Rack and Pinion Conversion Kit for TRZ 1.5" or 2" drop spindles is engineered to significantly improve steering precision and weight distribution on 1971 - 1976 Chevy Impala and Caprice B-Body platforms. By replacing the bulky OEM steering system with a properly narrowed Pinto-style manual rack, this kit sharpens steering response, reduces front-end mass, and delivers the geometry control needed for serious performance builds.

This steering conversion is not bolt-in. Cutting, welding, and fabrication are required to position the rack correctly for improved Ackermann and reduced bump-steer. For best results, TRZ recommends professional chassis-shop installation.

The kit includes an adjustable bump-steer / tie-rod adjuster assembly, rack clamp and mount plate, a 3/4" chrome-moly steering shaft with supporting brace, and three chrome-moly U-joints (one 9/16" - 26 spline to 3/4" joint plus two 3/4" 3/4" smooth joints). Billet aluminum steering arms are included where applicable for compatible GM platforms.

Spindle Notes

Select your spindle type carefully before ordering:

  • Factory / Non-TRZ Drop Spindles: Aftermarket brands such as Belltech and Summit follow factory geometry and require the factory-spindle version of this kit.
  • TRZ Drop Spindles (1.5" or 2"): These use a specific tie-rod adjuster length designed to improve toe accuracy and maximize bump-steer correction. This kit (321-3T) includes the correct TRZ-specific adjusters.
