Rack & Pinion Conversion for TRZ Drop Spindles (78 - 88 Malibu G-Body)
The TRZ Motorsports GM Manual Rack and Pinion Conversion Kit for TRZ 1.5" or 2" drop spindles is designed to bring precision steering and improved front-end geometry to 1978 - 1988 Chevy Malibu G-Body builds. This system replaces the bulky factory steering assembly with a custom-narrowed Pinto-style manual rack, reducing weight and delivering crisp, predictable steering response - perfect for drag racing, Pro Street setups, or aggressive street machines.
This conversion is not bolt-in. Installation requires cutting, welding, and chassis fabrication to ensure correct rack placement, optimum Ackermann, and maximum bump-steer control. TRZ strongly recommends professional chassis-shop installation.
Included in the kit is an adjustable bump-steer / tie-rod adjuster assembly, rack clamp and mounting plate, a 3/4" chrome-moly steering shaft with support brace, and three chrome-moly U-joints (one 9/16" - 26 spline to 3/4" joint plus two 3/4" × 3/4" smooth joints). Billet aluminum steering arms are included where applicable based on platform compatibility.
Spindle Notes
Choose the correct spindle configuration before ordering:
- Factory / Non-TRZ Drop Spindles: Includes aftermarket units like Belltech, Summit, etc. These use the factory-spindle kit instead.
- TRZ Drop Spindles (1.5" or 2"): Require a different-length tie-rod adjuster for improved toe accuracy and superior bump-steer correction. This kit (319-3T) includes the TRZ-specific adjusters.
