Rack & Pinion Conversion for TRZ Drop Spindles (70 - 81 Camaro/Firebird & 75 - 79 Nova)
The TRZ Motorsports GM Manual Rack and Pinion Conversion Kit for TRZ 1.5" or 2" drop spindles is engineered specifically for 1970 - 1981 Camaro and Firebird models as well as 1975 - 1979 Nova that require precise steering geometry and improved front-end control. This system replaces the bulky factory steering linkage with a platform-correct, narrowed Pinto-style manual rack, delivering sharper steering response and reduced front-end weight - ideal for drag racers and performance street cars.
This conversion is not bolt-in. Cutting, welding, and fabrication are necessary to properly position the rack and establish correct Ackermann and bump-steer geometry. TRZ strongly recommends chassis-shop installation.
The kit includes an adjustable bump-steer / tie-rod adjuster kit, rack clamp and mount plate, a 3/4" chrome-moly steering shaft with shaft brace, and three chrome-moly U-joints (one 9/16" - 26 spline to 3/4" joint plus two 3/4" × 3/4" smooth joints). Billet aluminum steering arms are included where applicable for supported F-Body and X-Body platforms.
Spindle Notes
Select your spindle type carefully before ordering:
- Factory / Non-TRZ Drop Spindles: Brands like Belltech, Summit, and similar are considered factory-style and require the factory-spindle version of this kit.
- TRZ Drop Spindles (1.5" or 2"): Require a different tie-rod adjuster length to improve toe accuracy and maximize bump-steer correction. This kit (318-3T) includes the correct TRZ-specific adjusters.
