Manual Rack & Pinion Conversion for Factory Spindles (70 - 81 Camaro/Firebird & 75 - 79 Nova)
The TRZ Motorsports GM Manual Rack and Pinion Conversion Kit is built to dramatically improve steering precision on 1970 - 1981 Camaro and Firebird models, as well as 1975 - 1979 Nova running factory or factory-style aftermarket spindles. By replacing the heavy factory linkage with a custom-narrowed Pinto-style manual rack, this system reduces weight, sharpens steering response, and enhances front-end stability for drag racing or street performance use.
This kit is not bolt-in. Installation requires cutting, welding, and chassis modification. TRZ strongly recommends having the system installed by a qualified chassis shop to ensure correct rack height and steering geometry.
The kit includes an adjustable bump-steer / tie-rod adjuster kit, rack clamp and mount plate, a 3/4" chrome-moly steering shaft with shaft brace, and three chrome-moly U-joints (one 9/16" - 26 spline to 3/4" joint plus two 3/4" 3/4" smooth joints). Billet aluminum steering arms are included where applicable for supported platforms.
Spindle Notes
Review spindle type before purchasing:
- Factory / Non-TRZ Drop Spindles: Includes aftermarket brands like Belltech, Summit, etc., which maintain factory-style geometry.
- TRZ Drop Spindles: These use a different length tie-rod adjuster for improved bump-steer and toe adjustment. This kit (318-3) is for factory-style spindles only.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this conversion kit require fabrication?
Yes. This is not a bolt-in kit. Cutting, welding, and chassis fabrication are required to properly install and align the rack.
Will this factory-spindle kit work with TRZ drop spindles?
No. TRZ drop spindles require a specific tie-rod adjuster length. Use the TRZ-spindle version of this kit instead.
