The GPI Gen 5 LT VVT Cam Phaser Limiter Kit is a GPI-exclusive solution engineered to correct the well-known cam control instability present in L84 and L87 Gen V truck engines. After performing a vast number of installs on Gen 5 LT platforms, GPI identified significant issues with uncontrolled camshaft timing - especially at high RPM and elevated oil temperatures - and developed a complete fix.

The Gen 5 LT Cam Control Issue

During camshaft retard at the top of the RPM range, GPI observed frequent discrepancies between commanded and actual camshaft position. In some cases, the system would retard timing despite no command to do so. As oil temperatures increased, the problem grew worse and created:

How the Factory VVT System Operates

While the system works well for OE efficiency, its wide adjustment range leaves minimal piston-to-valve clearance - a major limitation when installing performance camshafts with greater lift or overlap.
