Forgestar utilizes its unique Rotary Forged Flow forming specialized process to address the common challenge of achieving a lightweight and durable wheel. This specialized procedure begins with a low-pressure casting and employs a specialized machine that spins the initial casting. The outer portion of the casting is heated, and steel rollers are pressed against the rim area to shape and expand it to its final width and form. The combination of heat, pressure, and spinning results in a rim area that possesses strength comparable to a forged wheel.
Throughout the Flow Forming process, the applied pressure alters the mechanical properties of the cast rim, resulting in a lightweight cast wheel with strength and impact values that are on par with those happening in a forging process. This translates to a weight reduction of up to 15% when compared to a standard cast wheel.
Additionally, the resulting grain structure within the alloy of the wheel is linear, flowing in a single direction. This grain structure pattern, combined with the exceptional quality of casting required for the process, gives the rim area of the wheel huge mechanical strength, and elongation. As a result of these mechanical characteristics, Forgestar is able to reduce the thickness of the rim area resulting in a lighter wheel, without compromising strength and resistance to impact.
