The specialized production process of Flow Forming begins by using low-pressure casting and a unique machine. The initial casting is spun, and the outer portion is heated. Steel rollers are then pressed against the rim area, pulling it to its final width and shape. This combination of heat, pressure, and spinning creates a rim area with strength comparable to a forged wheel. The mechanical properties of the cast rim are actually changed during flow forming, resulting in strength and impact values similar to those of a forged rim. This means that compared to a standard cast wheel, a rotary forged flow formed wheel can weigh up to 15% less. The resulting grain structure within the alloy of the wheel is linear, flowing in a single direction. This grain structure, along with the high-quality casting required for the process, provides the rim area with exceptional mechanical strength and elongation. These mechanical characteristics allow Forgestar to reduce the thickness of the rim area, resulting in reduced weight without compromising strength and resistance to impact, making them the aftermarket wheels enthusiasts love.
